General
The Association was formed in 1948
when it was known as the RNVR Club (Sussex). Its aim was to keep ex-RNVR
officers in touch and for some time these formed the whole membership. In 1956
closer links with Sussex Division RNR were established and the name was
changed to the Sussex RNVR Officers Association. That in turn was changed in
1958, when the the Reserves were reorganised, to the
Sussex RNVR & RNR Officers Association. The present name (SANO for
short) was adopted in September 2001 to reflect the fact that membership is
now open to serving and
retired officers of all branches of the Service.
Membership
Full membership is open to past and present officers of the Royal Navy,
the Royal Marines, the Women’s Royal Naval Service, the Naval Nursing
Services and their Reserves. It is also open to officers of the CCF (RN
sections), Sea Cadet
Corps, the Royal Fleet Auxiliary and the Merchant Navy and the Navies of the
Commonwealth. Associate membership
is open to the widows/widowers of deceased full members and to past and
present officers of the Army and the Royal Air Force, including members of the
CCF (Army and RAF sections). The membership total is now around 150; and includes a number of serving
and retired
regular officers, as well as past officers of Sussex Division RNR.
Aims
The
aims of the Association are to provide a lively organisation for past and
present naval officers, offering a varied and interesting programme in a
friendly environment, to encourage and maintain the spirit of the Royal Navy,
and to preserve contact with the Royal Navy and naval affairs. We also aim to
develop and maintain links with similar organisations and to support naval
charities, and to provide members with such material benefits as may be
practicable.
The
Hove Club
Members of SANO may apply for
Corporate membership of the Hove Club. This scheme offers the use of most of
the facilities of the Club, including the reciprocal use of other clubs
elsewhere in Britain and other countries, for a reduced subscription. Contact
the Membership Secretary of SANO for more details.
Meetings
Meetings
are usually held every month except in August. The programme consists of
lectures, lunches, visits, social gatherings and formal dinners, including the
Annual Dinner in May and Trafalgar Night in October. We are indebted to the TA
Centre at Dyke Road, Brighton, for the use of their mess facilities and for
allowing us to store the many items of mess silver and trophies that were
transferred into the Association's care following the closure of the Wardroom
Mess at HMS SUSSEX in 1994. The silverware is still used at our formal
dinners. Most of our other functions are held at the Hove Club.
Subscriptions
Our annual subscription is modest (currently £10 per annum) and covers running
costs, including a monthly news letter sent to all members. Social functions
are generally self financing. More information on membership is
available from the Membership Secretary and the application form may be
found on the 'Joining SANO' page of the website. Any other queries
should be referred to the Hon. Secretary.
